savethenread

shut down

Read fast. Decide faster. A read-later app for the best writing on X and Substack, and the one in this notebook that didn't make it.

what it was

A Chrome extension plus a web app. One click saved a long post from X or Substack. The app turned it into a clean page, read it to you if you wanted, and then made you decide what to do with it. The home page called most reading lists a graveyard. This was meant to be the way out.

why I built it (sample)

I kept bookmarking great threads and never reading them again.

why it ended

(Kayne to write)

what it could do

  • One-click save: from X Articles and Substack posts, with a small Chrome extension.
  • X bookmarks, saved for you: tap the bookmark icon on any post and it lands in your library too. Added in v1.2.0, with an on/off switch.
  • A quiet reader: clean type, light and dark themes, font and size settings.
  • Focus Reader: speed reading, one word at a time at the pace you pick. Try the little one below.
  • Do, Decide, Defer, Drop: every article had to get a decision. Defer snoozed it for 1, 3 or 7 days. Ignore it three times and it deleted itself.
  • Listen: any article read out loud, with the current sentence highlighted.
  • Sova, the owl: summaries, a short critique, and questions answered about whatever you were reading.
  • More than X: RSS feeds, PDFs and EPUBs too, with a chapter list for the long ones.
  • Quote cards: highlight a line, get a shareable image, post it to X.
  • Streaks and stats: a reading streak and a stats page, so the habit stacks up.
  • Community picks: the most-saved articles of the week, plus a weekly digest email.
  • Works as an app: install it to your home screen. (I think it worked offline too.)

try it: the focus reader

ready?

Stop hoarding articles. Save it, read it fast, act on it. Your reading list is a graveyard. Read fast. Decide faster.
